Cerro San Cristóbal Santiago’s Most Stunning Viewpoint! Riding the Steep Funicular &Teleférico
Is Cerro San Cristóbal Worth It?
If you’re visiting Santiago, Chile, and want to see the entire city in a single frame, this is your answer.
Cerro San Cristóbal is a hill in the heart of Santiago. The highlights include a thrilling ride on the incredibly steep Funicular (cliff railway) and a scenic trip on the Teleférico (cable car) for 360-degree aerial views. At the summit, you’ll find the iconic statue of the Virgin Mary and, on a clear day, a breathtaking view of the Andes Mountains.
The Funicular: A Grade-10 Steepness You Have to Experience
If you’re visiting Santiago, Chile, and want to see the entire city in a single frame, this is your answer. Cerro San Cristóbal is a hill in the heart of Santiago.
The highlights include a thrilling ride on the incredibly steep Funicular (cliff railway) and a scenic trip on the Teleférico (cable car) for 360-degree aerial views. At the summit, you’ll find the iconic statue of the Virgin Mary and, on a clear day, a breathtaking view of the Andes Mountains.
Spirit & Scenery: The Statue of the Virgin Mary
Once the Funicular drops you off at the top, the area is split into two sections:
- The Peaceful Path: Right after stepping off, you’ll find a circular walkway showcasing various cross designs and a small, hidden chapel. I suggest taking a moment here to soak in the tranquility or offer a prayer. The atmosphere is wonderful.
- The Summit: A short climb up the stairs leads you to the main landmark: the massive white Statue of the Virgin Mary. This is the ultimate viewpoint, where the sprawling city of Santiago meets the majestic Andes backdrop.
📸 Photo Tip: Don’t just snap photos where the crowds are. Wander around to find secluded corners or wait for the “downward” leg of the trip—the crowds are usually much thinner then!
A Scenic Descent via Teleférico Cable Car
For the way down, we switched things up and took the Teleférico. It’s a completely different vibe from the Funicular, offering a panoramic 360-degree view that is widely considered one of the most beautiful cityscapes in South America. Golden Hour Tip: Late afternoon before sunset is the best time to visit. The light hitting the buildings and the mountains is magical (though this is also the busiest time, so plan accordingly!).
⚠️ Important Precautions
The cable car has two stations on the way down:
- First Station (The Zoo): Unless you specifically plan to visit the zoo, do not get off here. Your ticket only allows for one exit. If you get off, your journey ends there.
- Bottom Station: This is where you should get off. It’s at ground level and makes it much easier to catch a taxi or a ride back.
You Haven't Been to Santiago Until You've Been Here!

Comparison: Cerro San Cristóbal vs. Sky Costanera?
- If you want natural views, tranquility, and a sacred atmosphere, Cerro San Cristóbal is the answer.
- But if you want the view from the tallest building in South America, you might prefer Sky Costanera. Actually, if you have the time, both offer completely different and unique experiences!
Lessons from EP.1: Don't Come on a Monday!
If you watched our EP.1 video, you’ll know that we originally tried to visit on a Monday. Usually, it’s not closed on Mondays, but on our first day… it happened to be closed for maintenance! (So sad).
Key Tip: If you plan to visit on a weekend or holiday, I highly recommend booking your tickets online in advance to avoid long queues. But since we came on a weekday this time, it was quite relaxed, and we could buy tickets at the counter without a long wait.
